The Little Mermaid – Nàng tiên cá
Far out in the ocean, where the water is as blue as a cornflower and as clear as crystal, it is very deep. It is so deep that no length of cable has ever reached to the bottom. Here in these depths, live the sea King and his subject. Now , don’t thing that nothing lives at the bottom of sea except empty yellow sand. The most beautiful and unique flowers and plants grow there. Their leaves and streams are so flexible that the slightest movement in the water makes them stir and wave, as if they were alive. Big and small fishs glide between the branches of the plants, like birds between the trees on land. In the deepest part of all the sea is the Sea King’s castle. Its wall are built with coral, and long window are made of clear amber. The roof is built of shells that open and close as the water flows over them. These shells are very beautiful, because there is a pearl in every one of them and they are fine enough for the crown of a queen.
The Sea King had been a widower for many years. His old mother kept house for him. She was a wise woman and very proud of her hight birth, which meant that she could wear twelve oysters on her tail. Others of hight birth were only allowed to wear six. However, she deserved great praise because she cared so well for her grand-daughters, the little sea-princesses. They were six beautiful children, but the youngest was the pretties. Her skin was as clear and delicate as a rose petal and her eyes as blue as sea. Like all the others, she had no feet and her body ended in a fish’s tail.
All day long, she and her sisters played in the great halls of the castle, and among the living flowers that grew from the wall. The amber windows were open and the fishs swam in, ate from the princess’s hands and allowed themselves to be stroked like pets. Outside the castle was a lovely garden. Bright red and blue flowers grew there, with blossoms as bright as fire. The fruit glittered like gold, and grew on stems that waved in the water. The earth was made of finest sand, and it was blue. A blue radiance lay over everything, as if the sky was down there instead of the deep dark sea. In fine weather you could see the sun, and it looked like a purple flower with light streaming from it.
